This is not want you want to see when your car is in for a big job and, believe me, at Worcester’s Mobile Mechanic we don’t like piling on the agony.
The head bolts “snapped” when we were removing the cylinder head. This sometimes happens – and we had done nothing wrong.
The first thing we do when the head has been removed is to put a quality rust penetrant on the bolts and leave it for 48 hours. The head is going away to the machine shop for three days anyway.
Then we normally speak to the customer and agree how much we are going to charge. We also let them know if it adds anything significant to the time to complete the job.
Luckily in this instance the broken bolts came out without too much of an argument. This is sometimes the case, but I do think the rust penetrant plays a big part in it.
The customer was relieved as he expected a hefty charge to remove the broken bolts.
