Hitting the floor

A Ford Ranger was presented for its annual MoT inspection and failed as the brake pedal sank. If you held your foot on the pedal it actually hit the floor of the vehicle!

The customer was quite indignant and stated: “This is normal for this type of vehicle.” I questioned him further and he admitted that for the length of time he has owned the vehicle the brake pedal has sank when held. More to the point, it passed the previous year so why has it failed now?

I told him there is a dangerous fault with the brakes and the vehicle has failed the MoT. The customer then got quite angry and said that I should pass the vehicle.

The customer reluctantly allowed us to check the brake system in more depth. We carried out a routine test by clamping each flexible hose in turn until the pedal was “normal”. This within an hour identified a front brake as the culprit.

When we identified the fault, the customer was both shocked and pleased. When he collected the car the first thing he did was hold his foot on the pedal to make sure it did not “hit the floor”!
