Car needed an oil and filter change, not a new engine

I never fail to be amazed at what garages do and say and sincerely hope that here at Worcester’s Mobile Mechanic we tell it as it is.

This vehicle, a Vauxhall Astra, had been to another garage in the city for a full service. A month or so later, the engine started making a noise and the oil warning light flickered on tick-over.

The customer rightly went back to the garage which serviced the car to have the fault checked out and was told that it needed a new engine.

I said this might be the case but agreed to charge half an hour’s labour to confirm. Upon carrying out an oil pressure test, we advised the customer that an oil and filter change may cure the fault. The customer was understandably reluctant as he had recently paid for a full service.

Modern vehicles are fitted with “paper-element” oil filters. The oil filter in this vehicle had collapsed, which restricted oil flow and was the cause of the flickering light. It was obvious that the filter had not been renewed at the supposed full service.

The pictures show before and after the oil change.
