Filter fiasco

The oil filter in the photo is from a 15 plate Dacia Sandero, which its owner needed for work. The car was recovered to WMM by the AA and the engine was extremely noisy.

The patrolman, who reported that the car had excessive white smoke and a noisy chain, said it sounded like "a load of nuts and bolts being shaken in a metal bucket"!

We refused to start the engine, instead checking the condition of the oil and suggesting a repair process that, if it worked, would mean the car would be back on the road. If it did not work, a new engine would be required.

After some consideration, the customer agreed to the proposed repair attempt. WMM removed the engine oil and the filter. We then refilled with oil, fitted a new filter and added an expensive treatment.

We then had to stand next to the car to ensure it was okay, drain the oil and add another new filter. Clearly this was going to take a couple of hours.

Authority was given and the repair process was a complete success. The car sounded like it should and the white smoke had disappeared.

There was a small problem though as the car had a slight misfire and would have benefitted from three new spark plugs.

However, the customer chose not to have these as the car now drove.
