Gear oil in the pink

Worcester's Mobile Mechanic recently had a customer with an older, but still impressive, automatic Mercedes SLK.

The problem was the gear change suddenly became very poor. The owner was worried that he might need a new gearbox and would have to take it to an automatic gearbox specialist in Birmingham.

We suggested checking the oil first. As the gear oil was pink and watery, the first question to our trainee mechanic was ‘where did the water come from?’

Eventually we found the answer - the radiator had failed internally and was leaking coolant into the gear oil.

A new radiator was fitted, but we then had to address the gear oil. We removed the sump, cleaned the internal filter and refilled it with fresh gear oil. Once this was complete, the gear change was restored.
