Warning over rise in fake parts
Here at Worcester’s Mobile Mechanic we’ve heard many disturbing tales about fake car parts, which is why we fully endorse the Independent Garage Association’s warning about the dangers of motorists supplying their own parts to a garage for fitting.
We firmly believe that vehicle owners should let their garage of choice deal with the job from start to finish.
The benefits are that you and your car are protected, the risk of inconvenience or delay is reduced and most importantly, the safety of you, your passengers and other road users is not put at risk.
We share the IGA’s concerns about consumer supplied parts that may not be the correct fit and are of low quality.
There are also potentially complex warranty issues if the part fails, especially where provenance is difficult to establish.
This warning supports a new campaign from the Intellectual Property Office (IPO) which aims to raise awareness about the risks of counterfeit car parts.
The most common fake parts distributed worldwide include filters, brake pads, lights, wheel rims and air bags.
Explaining the full scale of the problem across the motor industry, the IPO’s campaign offers advice on how to identify fake vehicle parts, tips for buying parts online and how to report counterfeit goods.
