Many people think a service consists of an oil and filter change and have no comprehension of what a professional garage does when a vehicle comes in for a service.
This customer had a very lucky escape. This vehicle had come in for a service and everything went according to schedule. After carrying out the service, the engine is run to allow the oil to circulate and then ran up to temperature to ensure fan is operating as it should.
It was at this point that the technician simply listens to the engine. There was a very small noise barely audible from the cam belt area. Using a stethoscope, the noise was a very distinct “tap tap”, but not very loud at all - even with the stethoscope.
It took us ten minutes to remove the cam belt cover. We authorised this work as we could not get hold of the customer, thus losing 30 minutes billable time.
With the cover removed the fault was obvious. The customer was surprised at our efficiency and attention to detail and very pleased we had found the fault before expensive engine damage had occurred.
